Resolution criteria

This market resolves YES if Base officially launches a token by December 31, 2025, 11:59 PM ET that is actively and publicly transferable and tradable. Announcements alone do not qualify. Resolution will be determined by official Base communications and credible reporting from major crypto news outlets.

Background

Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 blockchain, announced at BaseCamp 2025 that it is exploring a native token to support decentralization. Base stated it is "in the early phases of exploration, and don't have any specifics to share around timing, design, or governance." As recently as November 2024, Base creator Jesse Pollak said there were no plans for a Base network token. Base has become the most widely used Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, with about 20.8 million monthly active addresses over the past 12 months.

Considerations

Coinbase is determined not to rush the token deployment, and is not planning to announce a release date anytime soon. It's not clear whether what's being considered will be a standard governance token or if it will have on-chain utility. Base is committed to building the token on Ethereum and will work with regulators on issuance and distribution, with Pollak stating "As a U.S. company, we're committed to working with regulators and legislators, and doing this right."
